Once I had no opportunity to come and see the opening of this exciting event I decided to ask David Schilter (curator) to TELL ME MORE about "visu laiku labākā izstād" (eng : the best exhibition of all times) in Riga.
Here's what he said :
" Hi Guste!
The opening was very surprising to us. We felt like we have the event of the year. It was extremely crowded and we would have never expected it on a Saturday evening. People reactions were throughout pleasant and the echo in the media was huge. Well it was really a successful event and still is, the exhibition is still open until the 8th of March.
What such an exhibition means to the Baltic is hard to say. But well it sure is the first opportunity to see here original works from several alternative well-known European comics artists from 8 different countries.
Almost all of them came to Riga to set up their work or at least to attend the opening. Some also made a performance and others led workshops for Latvian youth and Latvian artists made a special workshop for children. Next to the exhibition we also showed the french animation movie Fear(s) of the dark, which was made by 6 illustration/comics artists and we also had a experimental animation movie night with films from comics artists.
Well, this was a first step to introduce Latvians to comics, beyond the mainstream. So we hope lot of people get inspired and the comics art gets his due respect."
All I can say that this first step was really strong and David together with Zane Zajančkauska did the big job. All the Best for them !!! You are my heroes :)
Take a look and buy a ticket to Riga.
I'm sure It's not enough, see more here and here and here.
